Loggerhead Sea Turtle
Fauna Zakynthos Zakynthos
The Loggerhead Sea Turtle Caretta caretta is a species of marine turtle with global distribution. In Greece we find the largest nest number of the Mediterranean Sea. Loggerhead Sea Turtles normally reach one meter in length and can weight more than 100 kilograms. They spend their lives in the sea and only the females get on land to lay their eggs on sandy beaches. Egg laying occurs from late May to early August and baby turtles hatch from mid July to early October. In southern Zakinthos, Laganas Bay is one of the most important nesting sites for the species. There in 2021 more than 1300 nests were counted, while the average nest number per season since 1984 is around 1200. Smaller nest numbers are recorded mainly on the southwestern coastlines of Kefalonia and Corfu. Argostoli is a hotspot for observing the turtles from close range.
