Northern White-breasted Hedgehog
Fauna Zakynthos Zakynthos
Northern White-breasted Hedgehog Erinaceus roumanicus is a common small mammal found on the larger, but also several of the smaller Ionian Islands. Its global distribution includes Eastern Europe and part of Northwest Asia. In Western Europe it is replaced by the European Hedgehog Erinaceus europaeus and on the islands of the Eastern Aegean, the Southern White-breasted Hedgehog Erinaceus concolor. The species is more active at night. During the winter, most are dormant, although some are active all year round. It feeds on earthworms, slugs, beetles, larvae, eggs of terrestrial birds, etc. The main feature of the species is the few thousand spines it carries on its back. When he feels threatened, he curls up leaving only his spines exposed. Its main predators on the Ionian Islands are mainly the Eurasian Eagle Owl and to a lesser extent the Red Fox, while many get killed by cars on the road network.
