Michalitsi mansion
History Zante Town Zante Town

The Michalitsi mansion was built in 1765 by Dimitrios Antoniou Michalitsi to designs by the Parisian architect Joachim Bocher.

The mansion hosted the Viceroy of Rome, Eugene Beauharnai, son of Josephine and ancestor of Napoleon, governor of the Ionian Islands for a period.

The Michalitsi mansion was also host to George I in 1864 who visited Zakynthos.

In later years the brothel and its huge gallery served as the hall and offices of the local criminal court.

In the last pre-seismic years the mansion was left uninhabited and almost crawling inside. It was severely damaged by the bombing of World War II. It was completely destroyed in 1953.
