All about Zakynthos

The Mercatis mansion, where the archive of Antzolo Soumakis was stored, was set on fire in 1953.

The ancestor of the family is the Italian Peter Mercatis, who settled in Zakynthos in 1536, leaving Florence during the civil conflict between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines, and was enrolled in the Golden Book in the same year.

Theodotus-Anastasios Mercatis, husband of Maria Moutzan, sister of Elizabeth Moutzan Martinegou, was connected with Theodoros Kolokotronis by a warm friendship and supported the fighters of the revolution in every way.

He served as prefect, deputy and senator of Zakynthos.
