The Jewish Cemetery
Historical Site Zante Town Zante Town
The Jewish Cemetery is located on a hillside, on the road to the Castle. The site was granted to the Jewish Community in 1656. The last burial that took place there was Rebecca Mordou in 1954. In July 2014, in the Jewish cemetery, two marble monuments were unveiled in memory of the Jewish residents of Corfu and residents of Chania, who were originally from Zakynthos and were killed by the Germans during the Second World War, as well as in memory of the soldier Moses Forte, who was killed on the Albanian front. A marble inscription at the entrance reads 'Israelite cemetery from the year 1281'. It obviously comes from the first cemetery where the first Jews were buried during the Venetian occupation.
